Compass calibration and Helmholtz simulation of magnetic fields is an essential and required step to ensure the heading sensor functions as designed. The DigiCOURSE compass calibration procedure are performed in a non-magnetic building utilizing a rotating aluminum swing stand. Calibration corrects for various heading error sources that are unique for each unit, such as: unit-specific magnetic distortions, dovetail variance and bird body alignment (which degrades with use over time). The resulting error function is then resolved which are commonly known as A, B, and C coefficients, are written into the compass bird’s memory. Compass bird calibration procedures will reliably establish if a heading sensor is within the specified accuracy of ± 0.5 degrees. Helmholtz coil simulates magnetic fields that are experienced in high latitude locations. This steps ensures worldwide compass performance at simulated high latitudes and pitch.
